Alaska winters are cold and gorgeous. There’s a certain light photographers chase called the golden hour, and in the lower 48 I’m always having to do research and scouting to make sure I’m not going to miss it during a wedding or portrait session. Sometimes we’ll get it for a half hour, sometimes 5 minutes, but I’m always making sure my couples get portraits in that soft, golden light if the weather makes it possible.
I’m originally from Southeast Alaska and just moved back up north, this time to Anchorage. What I didn’t realize up here is that the winter sun is at such a low angle that the golden hour will actually last for hours… which is total DREAM. On the day of this bridal session it was overcast in town, but as soon as we got up in elevation we had the most amazing light all around us and were above a beautiful sea of clouds. Alyssa London, who was recently crowned Miss Alaska USA and is a fellow Ketchikan girl, was our model and wore the Dipped in Gold Gown by Marchesa Notte. Her hair and makeup was done by Karen Waldron, who took inspiration from the gorgeous and fierce wildness of Alaska. We kept everything else minimal and simple, you don’t need much for beautiful wilderness portraits. I’m looking forward to creating more wedding inspiration for Alaska brides!
Alaska has a lot of beauty but there’s something special about the ocean… even though I might be a bit partial after growing up on the water in rural Southeast Alaska. Turnagain Arm is a gorgeous, epic stretch of ocean and mountains that’s right outside the city of
Anchorage. I’ve spent the last few years in Oregon, so to re-launch my wedding photography in Anchorage, Alaska I reached out to Elizabeth Dye with the idea of a bridal shoot in a gorgeous wilderness location. She designs gorgeous gowns out of Portland, and was happy to hop on board creating a beautiful, custom gown. Samantha modeled as our bride and wore some of her gorgeous Tlingit jewelry, Bloomsbury Blooms who has some of the most gorgeous wedding florals in Alaska and made a breathtaking bouquet that tied everything together, and Andrea Moss graced us with her awesome hair and makeup skills. There’s so many talented wedding vendors based in Anchorage and so many incredible locations for weddings, I can’t wait to see what 2017 brings!
I take a limited number of weddings each year to ensure each couple gets my best work and full attention. To inquire about your date please contact me here!
Sarah and Ben traveled the world for over a year and fell in love with the laid back vibe and beaches of Tulum, telling me it was the most beautiful beach they had seen over all their travels including Southeast Asia and South America. When it came to choosing a location for their wedding they couldn’t think of a better place that would be gorgeous, accessible, fun, and comfortable for their guests even if they hadn’t travelled internationally before. They invited their family and friends down for their Ahau Tulum wedding and picked some of the best spots in the area for their gatherings, including having their rehearsal dinner at the fun and beautiful Zamas right on the beach. Afternoons were spent visiting ruins, snorkeling, walking the shops along the beach strip, eating delicious local food, exploring cenotes, and adventuring around the Yucatan peninsula. When the wedding day came they rolled with the punches when the weather turned unexpectedly stormy (in the middle of their vows), and turned it into an unforgettable party that went late into the night. In Sarah’s words, she married her best friend and there were “rainstorms, rainbows, items lost and found, cracked ribs, paradise, tequila, more tequila, dance parties, white sand, and great friends and family.” It was a special celebration to be a part of and a really stunning paradise to explore.. the Yucatan peninsula is magic.
Two of my closest friends asked me to be with them in Asheville for the birth of their baby boy. We waited… and waited… and waited… I changed my flight twice, and I had just enough time to photograph this beautiful soul’s entrance before I had to jet away for my next gig. There are really no words to describe what it’s like to be present when a new life comes into the world. So much love for this little one.
When Brian Whitt, a talented Portland based photographer, asked me to come on board for this shoot I was so excited to join the team. It’s always an inspiring, energizing experience to work with other likeminded wedding vendors in the area. During this editorial shoot we had complete creative freedom to create what we wanted, shoot it how we wanted, and do it because we genuinely love weddings in magical settings like this one. We took a bride out to a beautiful spot on the Oregon coast and spent the day enjoying friendship, hard work, and creative collaboration… pretty much my dream day. The perfect elopement setting? Yes and yes. The Pacific Northwest is magic. Thanks to everyone involved and inviting me to be a part of this!
Debbie and I met online years ago, before Pinterest existed and wedding styled shoots were rare… we had created our own blogs to gather inspiration and somehow stumbled onto each other’s in the process. After a few years of keeping in touch, we both ended up working in the wedding industry and moving to the same state. It’s been so fun to watch her go through the process of planning her own wedding to now owning the top wedding coordination and rental company in the Hood River area. I’ve been able to work along side Hitched in the Hood for multiple weddings now, and her whole team is fantastic. I’ve also fallen in love with photographing anything and everything in the Columbia River Gorge. These images are way past due sharing, but photographing her family was the perfect way to spend a beautiful fall day. We spent the evening exploring an insanely gorgeous property and then watched the sun set over local brews and conversation. Dream day. Looking forward to photographing many more weddings that this talented lady brings to life!
The Lan Su Chinese Garden is such a gorgeous location for a wedding venue in Portland, Oregon. A group of talented vendors and myself collaborated to showcase the intricate details with a simple, but elegant, bridal session. When a beautiful location is chosen for a wedding it doesn’t take much more to make it an incredible place for your guests to experience and celebrate with you.
